Reformatting computer, what happens to the updates, and do you really need them?

I was told that reformatting your computer will keep it healthy, especially if you use internet on that computer.

I noticed that there are a lot security updates (from Microsoft probobly), if I refromat the computer, isn't that going to delete everything on the hard disk?

I also heard that updates are nothing but spyware from Microsoft.

any suggestions on how to maintain the computer properly?

also my norton subscription expired and I don't have any money to resubscribe.

Also if anyone knows what particular math classes you have to take in oder to be a success full C++ video game programmer.

Also if any one knows any good books or websites on Maya 8.5 (besides digital tutor).

thank you

I don't know who told you that reformatting will keep your computer healthy but they are wrong. To keep it healthy keep it updates take regular backup and get a good firewall and anti virus program.

I've worked in IT for better than twenty years and I've never recommended reformatting as a way to keep your computer healthy.
Reply:Yes, reformatting will erase everything on the pc including updates. You DO need updates to your OS. They are provided to patch potential issues. Window's is basically swiss cheese of the OS world with a giant kick me sign on it's back. It's not exceptionally well written code, nor is it particularly stable. So you have to protect it by keeping it updated %26amp; using proper protection to keep out harmful programs.

As for reformatting, if you have been using antispyware, antivirus protection, firewall %26amp; a good clean up utility like ccleaner you really shouldn't have to reformat your entire pc. You should uninstall unnecessary programs, get rid of files, music, movies, ect you don't need or use then defrag %26amp; scandisk your pc to keep it in good shape.

If it's a total mess, then starting over is a good option. Just make sure to take the proper steps to keep it running smooth so you don't have to suffer through all the reinstallation %26amp; configuring again.
Reply:sheesh !!! your looking for all sorts of info today now arent ya ?...... well as for all the updates and what hapens to them when ya reformat is that they do all get deleted and you will have to redownload them and as for whether you need them or not the answer is yes you do want them as they are for security purposes as well as updating new features for windows components and then some if you are willing to let them ............ for the anti virus program there are many ways to get free versions i like to use avg mysellf and i use windows defender for the malware and spyware seems to keep puter running well with out any maintnance what so ever other than a weekly clean disk and defrag never have i had a virus nor pop ups as for your other info your are seeking im not the answer .........;)
Reply:*takes a stab!*

1. Yes, all the updates will be deleted and need to be reinstalled.

2. No they are not spyware. If you run a windows SP1 OS and add a Windows SP2 formattred drive, you will not be able to see the SP2 drive. You will need the updates!

3. Run spy-bot, Ad-aware (not adware or adaware, the correct program is by lavasoft), Disk cleanup, and disk defrag once a week. CCleaner if you have a bunch of errors.

4. AVG is free.

5. Algebra. As long as you understand and comprehend math, anything above Algebra is extracurricular.

6. Sorry, I do not.... Hope this all helps!
