I need help, I'm a really bad Algebra student?

Hi there guys,

I have just been admitted into a pretty decent university, UC Riverside. I was admitted under a provisinol basis, I had to complete pre-calculus before I get in. My problem is, I'am way to bad at math. I barely passed Algebra 1 and 2 with a C, Algebra 2 took me 3 attempts to pass, and this is a loooonngg time.

I have a decent GPA im good enough to get admission into this university but my Math is real bad. I want to earn my MBA, so I have to do really well on my GMAT. This test has a lot of math in it, I really need to get good at math. If someone knows of any programs, tutors or anything that will help me TRAIN my mind into a math thinking mind, please let me know. I know this is going to catch up to me at the end.

I think you are doing the right thing that you are repeating the classes that you didn't pass instead of just going on. However, I think you are having trouble because your foundation is weak. Your math classes will only get harder because they will depend on your previous knowledge. To me Math is similar to sports because you perform as you practice. That means you really have to put in the time. It require repetition. To contrast to basketball, it is like shooting jump shots over and over until you get it right. That is the only way you will get better at it. There are really no short-cuts in math.

Consider hiring a tutor. However, as I have said, you have to put in the time and the best way to learn is to actually do the problems yourself. In some subject areas, such as Political Science or History, the ability to skim over material and read quickly is rewarded. However, Math is not one of them! You do not get better at a sport by just sitting on the bench. Go out there and actually perform every step yourself. If you do all the homework problems and understand them, you will do well in the class. If you are not completing the homeworks or looking up the solutions somewhere, you have nothing to complain.

Try to get some help, espcially when it should be free at UCR. But remember, Math takes time. Make sure you allocate enough time.
Reply:I don't know anything specific. BUT just take some classes at a junor college over the summer, or during the year. Or find a relative who is good at math, hopefully they will help you for free since you probably well might not be loaded. Sorry I am not much help, but congradulations on getting into UC Riverside, I have friends who attend there. Hopefully I will be off to UC Berkeley or UCSD in a year. Goodluck!!! I wish you the best.
Reply:I'm bad at math too, the one thing that helped me was doing every exercise in math books that i could find. The way I got through Algebra 1%26amp;2 was to take it as a summer course, the only one, and spend 8 to 10 hours a day studying. Practice does improve skills.
