I called the characters A, B, C etc, and that changed to Arthur, Beatrice, etc ... but now want to lose the alphabet thing!
All English, at university, set 1950s-80s
A - Arthur
Only son of a minor aristocratic family. Bit weak and wimpy, quiet and bookish. Educated by tutor and some time in a boys boarding school, where he was picked on. Big heart though, stands by friends, clever, wise
B- Beatrice
Bright, lovely person. Unpopular at school, but now very popular. Clever, and hardworking. Genuine friend to all, esp. the misfits. Troubled mind and home.
C- Callum
B's boyfriend. Lower middle class. Poorer than peers. Rebel, outsider. Bitter and angry, but cares alot for B
D- Dinah
'Preppy' posh girl, envy's B's popularity. Bored of the boys she meets, attracted to C as dark and dangerous
E- Edward
Upper class idiot. Loud, rich, but immature. Cricket, skiing and racing
F- Felicity
Pretty, delicate, sweet. D's toy at school, but really adores B. Upper/middle class
Story names?
A- James (Jamie)
B- Catherine (Kate)
C- William (Will)
D- Anna
E- I'd leave as Edward
F- Alice (though I agree with Sophie for this one, too)
Browsing baby name websites or books I have lying around always helps me.
