Does this homeschooling case frighten and upset you as much as it does me?

California courts have determined that homeschooling by a parent that does not have teaching credentials is "educational neglect" and that children from 6-18 must either be enrolled in a public school, private school, or tutored at home by a credentialed teacher. What are your thoughts on this? Please state your religious view of this as well (Christians are not the only ones that homeschool their children).

Does this homeschooling case frighten and upset you as much as it does me?
Though this case was specifically aimed at this family that homeschooled their children, the ramifications are far exceeding to all other homeschools.

I honestly feel that this case was brought on by failures of the public schools to properly educate the students. Studies within the state of California have shown that homeshool children have scored higher in standardized tests than those of public schools. The spelling bee champion the last 7 years has been homeschooled, only 1 parent was a credentialed teacher. What does that tell you about the public school system?

The other really important issue to discuss with this ruling is: If all these students get enrolled in the public school system, where are the teachers going to come from. There is a national shortage on teachers. They are forcing a large amount of kids (167,000 I think) to enroll in public schools. That in turn will increase the teacher:student ratio and the students that need the individual help to grow, will not get it. Because of the NCLB law, these children will be passed, yet not have the education they deserve to get in public school setting. Also because of the NCLB, the school system will be forced to higher either more teachers or paraprofessionals to help with the influx of students. Thereby using more of the state budget for education, thereby raising taxes and mill levies in most of the areas, that are poor. So how does this help? It doesn't, it just an organization (NEA) trying to push their authority and it's going to backfire. The other reason I think this is happening, is there is a national shortage of teachers. California's logic in this: Why have credentialed teachers teaching students for free, when we can offer them a job to teach for money? Yet, they fail to understand why people homeschool. This court case will not answer that question.

Side Note: Due to the shortage of teachers, the state of Kansas is considering passing a law that will credential anyone with a bachelors degree and above to be a teacher. There is a national shortage of teachers and within the next decade there will be an estimated 2 million job openings for teachers.
Reply:I agree totally. Someone with no education isn't capable of teaching the next generation.
Reply:No, it doesn't trouble me at all. I am a Christian and I don't agree with the homeschooling thing at all.

You can't decide you're a doctor and write a prescription for your child. Why should you decide you're a teacher?

In Michigan there are NO restrictions at all...no testing to see that the kids are learning anything NOTHING...it is neglect.

Jesus said we cannot live on a mountain top. We are in the world, but not of the world.

EDIT:

One more thing...I volunteer in my son's class twice a week. I consider myself to be a creative person. I have a masters degree in social work with a post grad certification in social work.

I am AMAZED at the things his teacher comes up with to teach the students. Activities and such I would NEVER think of. She attends conferences and is up on all the new theories and teachings.

Teachers and doctors are not apples to oranges. You show disrespect when you think anyone can teach.....it is HARD, it is a SKILL, one that not everyone has.

Also, as an objective person, my son's teacher sees things I may not, helps him take lumps I may try and shield him from (that he needs to work through).
Reply:Lds)I think home schooling is fine, as long as testing is done a few time per year. I am hesitant, because my Daughter home schooled, and some of my Grandchildren can't spell worth a flip, but she was an exceptionally bad teacher. She was just to lazy to do it most of the time, and made the kids go out and work, so they didn't have time at home. Eventually she lost her kids for a year in Utah.
Reply:The fundamentalist Christians who homeschool their children are warping their brains, and they account for the vast majority of homeschoolers.

It makes sense to me, really, that your instructor should have credentials. But I guess if you can pass the standardised tests and get into college it doesn't matter to them.
Reply:I home-schooled my kids in Florida with the only requirement that they be tested each year by an approved teacher. My kids were testing 3 and 4 years above grade level.

But then, we used the Study Technology developed by L Ron Hubbard too.

I have to ask - who taught the first teacher?
Reply:The main purpose behind this is to make sure the kids are taught all the lies about evolution. They know that evolution destroys the faith of young children. However, they will pay dearly for what they are doing.

Mark 9:42 “And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.”
Reply:I think that's a tough issue. On the one hand, you don't want illiterate children, but on the other hand, you don't want the government to intrude. From what I've seen, homeschooling ranges from good to incompetent, but mostly incompetent. I think the state has a reasonable responsibility to ensure the education of children, although I'm skeptical about whether a credential is really what matters.
Reply:It's clear that schools, with all their requirements for credentials, are not producing educated children capable of making their way in the world of today. So I view this as hypocracy on the part of California. It has been shown that home-schooled children are better educated than institutionalized children.

Yes, this angers me more than frightens. It is another means for the state to take control away from parents to raise their children as they see fit.

.
Reply:I disagree that an uncertified teacher should not teach children.

(I'm a teacher)

Parents need to teach their children. Many, many parents don't teach their children the basics like the alphabet, numbers, colors, their address and phone number.

They leave it up to the school to do the work.

That is not good. Parents need to have the freedom to teach their own children. It is a command in the Bible.

Parents must teach their children.
Reply:When you consider the fact that home schooled children do better on average than children who attend public schools on standardized tests you can see that the law is just another example of the government trying to force people into another one of it's tax payer funded programs so that it can indoctrinate more children into becoming grown up robotic tax payers and continue to propagate an increasingly corrupt system.
Reply:Okla. I home schooled one year and struggled to pay for Christian school for other years. Calif. is a liberal state and doesn't have the right to tell parents how to raise their children. I believe it will come down to women having babies and having to turn them over to the state to educate and indoctrinate in the future. The state and school board already think they know whats best for your child than you do anyway. Its a shame what America has come down to because of the liberals.
Reply:I think that's fantastic. How many kids across the country do you think get "home-schooled" by parents that can barely read or add?
Reply:I think all children should be taught by qualified teachers, as somone trained as Lawyer may not understand maths and a doctor may have no knowledge of history. It's just my opinion.
Reply:It's The way Society is with there Labeling, and Guess what? It's going to get Worse, Yes?
Reply:As a Catholic I was home-schooled for a couple of years and I absolutely hated it! I know the schools now are trash, but they enable us to interact with other children and develop people skills.
Reply:i completely agree with that ruling. do you think a teacher in a public school should be qualified to teach a child, if so, then why shouldn't a parent teaching a child at home be qualified to teach children.
Reply:I home school my daughter and I just heard this on the radio about ten minutes ago.

I am not pleased with the decision but I anticipate it will be overthrown. I don't always agree with the ACLU but they have their uses in cases like this.

My religious view of this is that I prefer to teach my daughter myself so I can teach her something as opposed to send her to school to get molested, bullied, and stupid.

The good news is that in my State, they do require either a college degree or currently a religious waiver (it is my understanding that the only ones hurt by this in CA are those parents without degrees). I can easily qualify under the certified part of the law so I am not as worried as some others might be.

I anticipate that a co-op system can be set up (we have one here) with "teachers" who meet the qualifications and who can act as the teacher on paper for legal. So while I don't like the ruling I anticipate it will be dealt with in a number of ways.

My family lives in CA and they are all home schooling (they are pretty evangelical folks but we get along some how). I will have to shoot them an email to see how they are dealing with this (there are 17 kids on that side that are being home schooled.)
Reply:The thing that set this whole thing in motion should have been confined to the one family that it pertained to and 166000 other home schooling families should not have been included in the court case. I believe that parents should have the right to home school their children as long as they are able to obtain curriculum that at least covers the basics. In most states, that is the case. Most home schoolers I know, go above and beyond teaching their children the basics. I do not believe that home school children should sleep until noon and do about an hour of work and call that an education. As a parent who currently sends my children to public school, I can say that there are days I feel like I am sending them into a den of lions or a fiery furnace. There is so much negative that they have picked up in public school and these are things I spend every weekend and evening and summer trying to weed out of them. I have not been able to afford to home school, and that is the only reason I do not right now. California made some very disturbing changes last year when it was deemed that the use of the words "father and mother and husband and wife" were a violation in public schools. If the public school system feels it has the liberty to teach unproven theories and its own form of morality then I believe it is my duty as a parent to put a stop to the molestation of my child's mind. I do not feel it is anyone's job to look down on other parents who send their children to public school or for other parents to look down on those who choose to home school. I had friends that were home schooled and tested in 7th grade in some areas on a college level. Moreover, some who went on to become lawyers, excelling in their college classes just as well if not better than a public school taught child. The truth of the matter is that home schooling is not for some. The few that are neglectful should not cause punishment for those that are very careful to insure an exceptional education for their children at home.

(I am a Christian mother who desires to home school my now public educated children)

*edit two of my children were bored to tears in their pre-k and kindergarten classes because they already knew more than what was being taught to them by the public school system and if I would have had the opportunity to continue educating them myself, they would have kept going at an accelerated pace...
Reply:I'm good with it... I think some people do educationally neglect their children. Regardless of religious opinion.
Reply:At first glance it seems fine to me. But I'll check out the link and think it more trough. I know how some deeply resent the government interfering at all, in their children's personal education. However I think in this case it's all for the best.

-Home-schooled, atheist agnostic.
Reply:The government just wants to make sure that kids are being educated by people who are able to educate. Would you be in favor of home medical schooling?

Edit: What do you have to support your claim that most parents who choose to homeschool are qualified? And nobody is talking about taking people's kids away.
Reply:I have to agree that every American child deserves the chance at a reasonable education (to help procure a secure future for us all). There is no reason why a dedicated parent cannot become accredited. Not doing so if your intent is to home-school your children yourself does seem neglectful to me.
Reply:I am an atheist, and I agree with the Court's decision.

Should a parent with no official medical training be "allowed by law" to perform surgery on their child? Why ever not? Because they ought to have demonstrated they have some idea what they are doing, perhaps?
Reply:I agree.

According to the movie "Jesus Camp", 75% of children who are home schooled are Evangelical Christians.

Given some others I know around here- I'm guessing that the majority of that other 25% are Mormons.

'enuff said.

Atheist.
Reply:Who knows what a child needs to be taught more then a parent? I hope this law does not pass in other states because I have friends that home school. It's not like parents are teaching their children things they learned in school. Home schooling is still connected to a school that provides a computer and all the materials for learning and doing lessons.
Reply:While in principle I believe homeschooling to be a viable option for many, I have heaps of concerns throughout my own experience in supporting a home schooling family and awareness of others who homeschool.

I would still consider it if I lived in an area where schooling was unsafe. If teachers were incompetent I would deal with that another way.

As a teacher, I considered homeschooling our family, but the issue that concerned me the most is that children need to work with others and have social interaction.

I supported a family for a while that had a teen homeschooled instead of attending highschool. I provided and oversaw the curriculum and they were inspected from time to time. However, the teen did next to nothing as her mother did not seem to be able to sit her down and take the time to work with her. Yet they were acceptable.

Another child I taught at school. His family were obsessed with his education, to the point of him having his own schoolroom where he spent hours doing work in holidays and out of hours. He just had no life left in him. They took him out of school a year or so after I had taught him. Yes I had contacted our child services, but nothing ever happens. I truly fear for him as now there is noone to balance the scales or keep an eye on his welfare beyond learning and books.

Even having a parent who is a registered teacher will not solve the issues that I have regarding homeschooling.
Reply:Every home schooled child I have met have been exceptionally better educated than public schooled children. I am sure there are exceptions but if they are passing state required tests they have NO right to force you not to home-school. In Russia there were children taken away from parents that home-schooled. For those of you that thinks government knows best are about to have a rude awakening.

In Georgia there is such a shortage of teachers that you can teach with an associates degree and they will get you accredited. Its called the TAPP program.
Reply:I live in B.C. Canada. I know many children who are home schooled by a parent or family member . They're thriving from the more focused attention regardless of their parents credentials.

It is disturbing that California seems to be harder on some groups and maby not so much on the ones that need more supervision. I cannot give any real examples of this but it seems to be true everywhere.
Reply:It's fine with me on all levels, religious or not.

Would you want your children to be taught at medical school by people without medical degrees, and then go out and start operating on you?

EDIT: Love the additional details and attacks on people with differing views.

"By comparing it to medical school, you are comparing apples to oranges and showing your inability to use common sense. Most parents that choose to homeschool are well educated and realize that their children aren't receiving a quality education in public school, which is why they choose to homeschool"

"California courts have determined that homeschooling by a parent that does not have teaching credentials is "educational neglect"

It is apples to apples, sorry. Perhaps you are the one seriously lacking in common sense.

Homeschooling by a parent without teaching credentials. Medical school with a professor without a medical degree.

Where's the problem again?
Reply:1. It isn't the whole state of California. It's a few counties.

2. No. Because if you're complaining that the teachers aren't qualified to teach your children, then what makes you think that YOU are qualified to do so if you don't have the proper education and preparation? There has to be SOME oversight, and SOME standard, otherwise children fall through the cracks and get lost.

It's not like it's that difficult to get yourself accredited, or to find someone who is. If you're REALLY invested in your children's future, then it's a worthwhile investment to make sure that you are equipped to give them the best education possible.

Drama-free approach to setting her straight?

you might have seen my last question, where i wanted some advice on my two best friends that seemed to be joined at the hip. so they have been known to sit next to each other EVERY DAY in science class, with me usually sitting w/ some loser =[. So today one of them decided to sit w/ someone different. My other friend saw her sitting w/ someone else and she got RAGING MAD. So i defended the friend who decided to sit w/ someone else calmly. Now the mad friend hates me. Which is unnessecary right? oh and now im getting blamed for making her look stupid and having to start tutoring in science. How does that have anything to do w/ me?? advice please, i dont want to start drama, but im just confused that someone could get this mad over a seat. c'mon girl, grow up.

Drama-free approach to setting her straight?
Just walk away cause if you didnt do anything wrong why should u be the one to confront her. Or you could just say you need to stop trippin honey. U'll make new friends im positive you will
Reply:Forget both of them. it may be really hard, but if they're joined at the hip and sort of ignoring you, they may be using you for something. I'd feel left out and alone. Besides, why get involved in all of this drama? No matter what, if you remain best friends with them you'll get dragged into it. Please, just make new friends and forget about the 4 yr. old twins.

Thinking about Suicide?

I'm having alot of Algebra Trouble and I've NEVER gotten a D on my report card and my dad says he doesn't care as long as I try my best I am trying my best, but I really want to do better There isn't any tutoring at my school for some dumb reason and I understand the work IN class unless it is a test. For homework which sometimes we have for a grade I fail. I'm having a really hard time with math and I'm REALLY REALLY stressed recently and I've actually been thinking about killing myself...which suprises me. It's not only math, I've never had a boyfriend I have great friends, but guys never want to be more than friends with me, I've recently had to get glasses major self esteem dropper, I've been cutting, and Alot of girls at school make fun of me ( they are "popular") I hate my gym teacher and she hates me we are starting volleyball soon which I HATE the most and I know they will make fun of me more b/c I can't serve. Is my life worth living?

Thinking about Suicide?
Hellen...answer to your question...DON'T DO IT!!!

Life has it's challenges and from reading your previous questions and issues, you seem to be an intelligent person. You know that this is not really the route that you want to go. Heck, to share a quick story, I grew up "an ugly duckling"...what it did for me was give me a stong sense of what was right in life, not a superficial coating of what looks good in life. You are of a stronger fiber than a lot of people your age. Find the good things in life and focus on them. Things will work out fine. Hey, sometimes we don't see the reasoning right away, but it always works out.

If you get really down, don't be embarassed, but call the suicide hotline, or ask your parents to make an appointment with a doctor. Because of your age, your parents may need to know what is going on, but they could be a support system as well. Hang in there Hellen....things will work out okay. Take one day at a time.
Reply:all i can say is there is life after high school... don't let it get you down, of course your life is worth living! your young, you have your whole life ahead of you... dont worry about those girls, or not having a boyfriend... go to school, get your education, and dont worry about them. one day you will look back and realize that nothing that happens in high school matters later in life... jus keep you head up. :)
Reply:A great man once said, "The problem is the problem is not the problem." Meaning that the things you are going thru is not the problem, it is the meaning you are attaching to the these things. Maybe try lightening up a bit, maybe not be in such a hurry about things, maybe try being grateful for the things you have in your life that you love and enjoy. Most of the the things you are dealing with are normal teenage stuff, just be patient while being persistent about getting better and doing better and you will likely forget this stuff ever happened in very short order. Best Wishes.
Reply:I thought of doing suicide years ago and cuting my self ..everyone goes through this hard stuff at home and at school. It really is hard to get over it. i've thought of doing suicide since i was age 7 or 8. I can't conrol it ..but i know that you and others will get over it soon. If you would like to add me to your yahoo messanger/or e mail..to talk about it...it's lil_mimi1807@yahoo.com. It might help us both.
Reply:Of course it is!! talk to your parents, teacher or close friend about it. Almost nothing is so bad that you need to take your life for it. Talk to your math teacher and see if you can come in early for some help. Taking your life is not worth it. Not only will it hurt your family but it will hurt your friends and other people as well. As for the vollyball part, just try your hardest and ask a friend to help you. Who cares if you can't serve in vollyball!!

Tonight when you go to bed pray for yourself. God is ALWAYS there for you and he loves you.
Reply:before you think of suiciding, think about how your friends%26amp;family would feel. you shouldn't think about suiciding just because of low self esteem, 'cause trust me, it isn't worth it. so what if you get teased by "popular" girls? they're probably just some dumb bitches trying to act like they're the ****. even if you're stressing about school %26amp; whatnot just remember that your life IS worth living and that things will get better.
Reply:Go to your school counselor tomorrow. If you cannot deal with these problems, what will you do when real troubles come in your adult life? My daughters were told by their math teacher they will never get Algebra and their lives still have gone on. I always thought I was the fatest, ugliest girl at my high school (glasses, too). But I met a man who thinks I'm the most beautiful girl in the world and that's all that matters (we've been married now for 30 years this June). Be glad that you haven't complicated your life with the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing. This should be one of the most fun times in your life! Talk to an adult about your thoughts -- you have some real stinkin' thinkin' going on.
Reply:..... constantly. LOL.

as per you, well you're young honey. Things will get better. As for those girls, they're stupid so pay them no mind. I wasn't super great at Math either, but it's no reason to want to kill yourself!! Just take it slow. I am sure there are other things you are good at.

As per volleyball -- well, how could anyone hate it?! LOL. I LOVE IT! Too bad you're no where near me, or i'd help you out with that, even though i haven't played in a really long time. Even though i'd like to. Practise! You'll get better!

You have to learn to love yourself. Who cares what other people think! I know it's tough, but life goes on! AND as you get older it doesn't necessarily get any eaiser! (trust me on that one!) So you have to learn to be confident in and of yourself. There will always be people that don't like you, and there will always be things you can't do well. BUT there will also always be people that love you for you, and things you can do great.

So, focus on the good stuff, not the bad. Be confident in yourself, and screw what everybody else thinks!

♥ Hugs ♥
Reply:those are stupid reason for wanting to kill your self! grow up life is hard!!! it just gets harder!
Reply:When I was young I thought about suicide, too. Sometimes it just feels like too much but I promise you this will pass. Please talk to someone. Life IS worth living. And as for the popular kids, some will be very happy adults but some will not. They won't know what to do with themselves when they don't have that "shool life" and popularity. Hang in there. You will get through this and life will feel good again.

It sounds like your dad really loves you and you love him. PLEASE talk to him. I believe in education but school is NOTHING compared to LIFE. Your father would rather you fail every course than to lose you, I can assure you of that.

God bless you. There are people who have read this, that I know are praying for you. You could pray, too. Life is hard sometimes but if you hang in there, the hard times always seem to fade away and the good times come back. Life is an ebb and flow... up and down... it will go back up for you, I promise.

Here are some websites that you might find helpful. Please do not hesitate to talk to someone, don't feel embarrassed or bad.
Reply:hell yes **** those prissy popular bitches you are a real person you are better than them dont let them make you feel bad you seem like a wonderful person and if you ever need someone to talk to im here this is just one part of your life i promise they will get better you will find a guy and its not ur fault they dont want to date you they are just missing out bc they are stupid its there fault they dont see good in you. i hope this helps please dont kill yourself

But i didn't do any clubs fresh year except Community Service club my fresh year, and nothing else. I also got 1 Saturday Detention fresh year, so far i am clean though.

Do you think that my chances of getting into a good college are partially ruined b/c of my fresh year?

What colleges do you think i can get into? (i am looking to becoming an orthodontist/ oral surgeon maybe, but at least something in medical field).

Messed up freshman Year?
You want recognition? You got it. You have done good kid.

Don't worry about the F.year. You are OK. Move on. No looking back. Just keep up the good work in jr. and sr. years.

Your sights are set on ortho / oral surgeon.? Good line. Potential to make good rewarding career out of that. Many in my family are just that and they are doing well.

Good luck.
Reply:I don't see where you really messed up at. Those grades look pretty good to me. Don't stress about it; your freshman year is over and you can't go back and change it, so don't even worry about it. Just concentrate on what you are doing now,do your best, keep your grades up, and you'll be fine. I think you should be able to get into some pretty good colleges with those grades. Good luck!
Reply:Hahah... seriously? You're fine, trust me.
Reply:you forget that colleges are also concerned with the trend of your grades they see this and u gonna be set. im kinda stagnant at 3.7 only problem is i see not alot of honors. get on that. u need ap course to get into competitive schools, by competitive i mean usc and nd. u can not really try next two years and probably get into big ten schools easily

Am I making the right choice?

I was forced to withdraw from organic chemistry and physics 2 because my professor told me unless I got A's on the tests from here on there was no way I could pass. I struggled to get a C on any of these tests and did not pass a single one. Michigan makes courses and tests tougher than they have to be I basically studied my heart and did not do good. However after withdrawing I learned of tutors and other resources which convinced me to give U of M one or more chance? However I am still thinking of sending a transfer application to University of Wisconsin or University of Georgia because my gpa at my old school was close to a 3.4 and there is a strong chance Id get in. Also I printed off the exams for the same material that was covered and the exam was much easier and had less questions for the same amount of time.

Am I making the right choice?
First of all, what is your major? If you chose a major that you are struggling with maybe you should rethink what you really want to do in life.

Also, if you liked your old school much better then I would also decide to make the change. But only make this change when its reasonable to do so and not in the middle of a semester. It also depends on your finiacial situation too but if you can make the change and you really want to do so then I would do it.

Life takes us in all directions and you have to eel good about the choices that we make. Weigh all the pros and cons and do what is best for you.
Reply:life is not about getting the best the world tells you, your life is about you, what matters most to you not because the world is preaching this is best for you.

a flower is not meant to live in a dessert where it has no use.

Your life is in your hands. You can make it what ever you want to make it. Choose a career path that you are passonate for and you feel you can do good in.

Should I be a doctor or a nurse anesthetist?

i'm a college freshman and thinking about becoming an M.D. or a nurse anesthetist..here's the dilemma, i don't quite know which to pick. I am doing alright in my classes (general chem and general bio) but I have a b/c in both right now (b in both last semster). I know those aren't competitive grades for med school and that's why i'm lost in my "path". All the premeds i talk to just LOVE chemistry and some are even tutors, and i'm struggling to just get through it all. But i definetely know I want to work in the healthcare field. My parents insist on me trying to get a B.S. degree in nutrition (with a pre-med track) and get into med school. But what worries me is if I don't get in, i'll be stuck with a degree in something that's not that healthcare oriented. They also tell me about how much $ M.D.'s make versus nurse anesthetists, but M.D.'s don't make THAT much since they have many loans to pay back. Plus Nurse Anest. make very good money, too. Any suggestions? (I have a 3.5 gpa)

Should I be a doctor or a nurse anesthetist?
3.5 still makes you a competitive med school applicant. Yes, loans are a lot but you gotta realize just how much money doctors make. When you consolidate, you can pay back over like 30 years. Right now, interest rates for school loans are lower than a loan for a house or car.

Oh, and I don't know any med student/doctor who loved chem. All the ones I know much preferred bio. One said he didn't mind O-Chem too much (cuz he's a freaking genius and got A's in everything), however, the others all say they loathed O-Chem.
Reply:agreeing with minnie here, anesthetists make more and work less. there's also a lack of them right now so it shouldnt be too hard to find a job if you take the courses to become one
Reply:I suggest a nurse anesthetist. Pre-med is an extremely hard work track, since i heard from my cousin who had spoken to a medical school admissions officer, that getting As in chem, bio, o-chem and physics is really, really important. A 3.5 GPA is excellent for a freshmen, however for a pre-med student it is really important to have your GPA as close to 4.0. Since a 3.5 is considered an average for med school applicants.
Reply:i think the best of the two is an anesthetist, because i once did a project on the profession and i found out they make more than doctors and nurses of course depending on your education.
Reply:If you want to stick in the healthcare field, but are struggling with chemistry and stuff... you might want to think about physical therapy or something like that. That's not quite as "science" related.

And nurse anesthitists do make good money. And it's quick work. Easy schedule I'd say.

I don't know what else to tell you. Follow your heart. You could take some fun classes as school, and maybe that will help you decide your path and you will know for sure if the medical field is really what you want to do.
Reply:Have you thought about being a Physician's Assistant? That is promising too....not that you don't already have enough on your plate to think about...

Teenage daughter and grades?

My 13 yr old is so obsessed w/ older boys (16), myspace, etc that she is turning in work at school that is incomplete, or fails it. I have her in a tutoring after school program, I've taken away her computer, her cell, her weekend plans etc and I'm still seeing the same results...rushing through work, not caring, Weve met w/ teachers they say she is painfully shy (duh) wont ask questions, We have had several talks w/ her, she promises to bring them up and does, for a few wks then goes back down to C's and under. What in the world can I do?

Teenage daughter and grades?
Try having her do her homework sitting at the kitchen table. You sit across from her the whole time she's doing it. Then if she gets ditracted you can bring her focus back. Tell her that 16 year old boys are "OFF LIMITS". We all know what teenage boys are focused on (and that's perfectly natural for them) But, we need to let our daughters know that the boys natural behavior WILL get the girls in trouble.

You can also have the school test her to see if she has any learning disabilities or if she's above level and just bored. Children who are above grade level tend to get bored because they already know the stuff so, they think about other things while the class is being taught and may be so interrested in the other things on their mind that they may not notice when something new is introduced and the lesson just passes them by. Before they know it, they've fallen behind and because they are children, they don't know what to do about it. They may be embarrassed at that point to ask for help because they know they should've been paying attention.

I had the same problem with my youngest girl. I tried everything I could think of to get her to focus. By the time she turned 16, I found that taking her out of school and home schooling her, worked. In 4 months time, I brought her back up to grade level (10th grade- she was at a 4th grade level in math and a couple years behind in all other subjects). We sat at the kitchen table for 6 hours a day (yes, we took breaks) As I was teaching her math, I realized that she did not know HOW to borrow and was just inverting the numbers to finish the problems. The teachers had NEVER taken the time to find out WHY her answers were wrong, they just gave her a bad grade and moved on.) I was able to bring her focus back whenever she lost it. I then sent her to our local colleges GED program. In 3 months time, she was able to pass the test and recieve her GED. Good luck :)
Reply:She needs some time on Daddy / daughter dates to be reassured of his love and affection. Also, for you, keep the door open for all talks and don't react to anything she says, no matter what.

As far as the grades, give her an incentive. How about $10 for every A that she brings home on her report card?
Reply:Stick with your limitations but try to find fun things you can do together, either as a family or with one parent individually. Show her what IS cool to do.

Try reading How to Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids will Talk.
Reply:it sounds like you've done just about everything you can do. now it's really more up to your daughter and how much she WANTS to learn. maybe if she took more classes that pertain to her interests, that might help? or she could try taking more classes that are a little less book-intensive, like music classes (choir or band or something).
Reply:Is your daughter currently in a public school? Is it possible to transfer her to a private school next sememster? One that has smaller classes, perhaps even an all girls school (where she may not be so shy). Explain to her that she can get held back a grade if she does not pass her classes. It sounds as if you have already taken away her privleges for negative reinforcement, but the one thing that you did not mention is: are YOU spending time with her and helping her with her homework? If she is rushing through it and turning it in then perhaps you are not checking the work after she finishes it. SIT WITH HER!! HELP HER!! And BE CONSISTENT!!! Everyday! Ask her, "where's your homeowrk? Let's sit down and get to it". Where are you in all of this? Hope this advice helps! -Janet
Reply:Have you considered taking her to a psychologist. She may be experiencing depression since she can't cheer anymore. Sometimes it's hard to spot.

I believe your daughter might bennifit from a psychotherapist.
Reply:As your daughter is 13now, she's having a lot troubles changing from a child to adult. She may has more thing to spend time on, not only school and grades but also bf, beauty, etc. That makes her cannot concentrate on her study.Don't order her to much, it only makes her more tired. All you can do now is to listen and to be patient with her. Ask her teachers if the course is too hard, too. Good luck
Reply:its really up 2 ur daughter as far as how much she wants 2 learn. i did really bad in 8th grade science bcuz i didnt turn in my work in on time. i actually had a D and F 4 part of 4th quarter. i was in public school, and privates school, and i actually got MORE help in public school! also, i am now in 9th grade and doing gr8. 2 some ppl, like my friend, she got ok grades in middle school, but didnt stress 2 much bcuz she said middle school didnt really matter. that could be ur daughter. it could also be the friends she hangs out w/ , and she probably thinks its cool. plz tell her 2 stop fooloing around, especially in 8th grade, cuz thats the year that matters in middle school- it gets u ready 4 high school. she wont be prepared as much 4 high school as she would of if shed do her work! i dont really know what u can do 2 help her- its up 2 her. but maybe an incentive for every A or B she gets, like 10 minutes on myspace, or 10 minutes on the phone.

ill keep my fingers crossed 4 u, ur husband, and ur daughter! hope she shapes up soon!

and GOOD LUCK!!!
Reply:You should start with discussing it with her again, but if that doesn't work maybe you need to punish her to protect her grades. Start by taking her PC away for most of the time, or if she's staying out ground her. Depending on the kind of girl she is, if it's really serious the good old smacked bottom usually works at 13.
